Neonatal & Developmental Medicine Overview

Our paediatricians (Paediatricians) from Department of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine provide a complete range of services for newborns, from normal to intensive care, of both inborn and outborn infants.

Our baby doctors provides wide range of services includes perinatal services, newborn screening, pediatrics consultation & follow-up, vaccination services, follow-up programmes for high-risk infants and developmental assessment.

Staff at the Department of Neonatal & Developmental Medicine consists of a specialized, highly skilled team of doctors who work with nurses and allied health professionals to provide the highest standard of care for the newborn.  We provide the following services:

Perinatal counselling for parents-to-be

Resuscitation at Delivery of the newborn

Newborn Screening

This includes detailed clinical examination and screening for various medical conditions.

Inpatient Management of all Disorders of the Newborn

This includes management of the newborn at all levels of care from simple to complex.

Outpatient Consultation Clinics

Our doctors provide holistic ambulatory care for children, including management of common outpatient conditions and monitoring of growth.  Outpatient clinics are located at the “SGH Baby and Child Clinic”, Block 5, level 1, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Centre. Vaccination Services

A complete range of vaccines is available that will protect your child against childhood infections. Such vaccinations include the BCG, vaccines against Hepatitis A and B, DTaP/IPV/HiB (5-in-1) and DTap/IPV/HiB/Hep B (6-in-1), MMR and MMRV, chickenpox as well as vaccines against influenza, pneumococcus and rotavirus.

Neonatal Neuro - Developmental Clinic

This clinic ensures longitudinal continuing care of extremely preterm babies upon discharge from hospital.  High-risk babies undergo coordinated, multi-disciplinary screening of their development and behavior, so that abnormalities or deviations from the norm can be promptly detected with opportunity for early intervention and improved outcomes.

Parent / Caregiver Training

Our team of experienced nurses provides training courses that aim to equip dads and moms with the skills necessary for parenting their babies with confidence.  These courses include the “Basic Resuscitation Course” that teaches parents how to handle acute emergencies at home as well as “Parenting Course” which comes in especially useful for first-time parents.

Lactation Consultancy

From 1 October 2013, Singapore General Hospital was accredited with the “Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)”.  All mothers upon delivery practice skin-to-skin contact (SSC) with their babies, leading to calmer babies with better temperature control and more stable vital signs.  Experienced nursing staff is at hand to guide first time mothers in establishing and maintaining breastfeeding.

Light-Weight Club (LWC) Support Group

The Light Weight Club was started as a support group for parents of former very-low-birth-weight (VLBW, <1500 grams) children so that they may receive social - emotional support when parenting their children.  A highlight is the LWC Annual Party organized for these ex-VLBW children.  To find out more about Light-Weight Club Support Group, click here.
