    Upper Gastrointestinal & Bariatric Surgery Overview

    The department consists of accredited specialists in General Surgery with sub-specialty interests in Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgical Oncology, Bariatric (Obesity) Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery (key-hole surgery) and Diagnostic & Therapeutic Endoscopy. Our team of UGl&B Surgeons are committed to provide state of the art and evidence-based surgical management of various upper digestive tract diseases and general surgical conditions.

    We work within multidisciplinary teams consisting of medical and radiation oncologists from National Cancer Centre Singapore(NCCS), gastroenterologists from Centre for Digestive and Liver Disease(CDLD) SGH and endocrinologists, physiotherapists and dieticians from Obesity & Metabolic Unit (OMU), LIFE Centre SGH to provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with common and complex upper digestive tract related diseases such as diseases of the oesophagus, stomach & intestines, gastrointestinal tumours (GIST), bile duct & gallbladder stones and obesity & metabolic disorders.

    The department also provides round the clock acute general surgical & emergency endoscopy services and performs surgery for hernias and conditions of the spleen, adrenal glands and retroperitoneum.

    Minimally Invasive Surgery (key-hole surgery)

    In minimally invasive surgery, surgeons use a variety of techniques to operate with less injury to the body than with open surgery. In general, it is safer than open surgery and allows you to recover faster and heal with less pain and scarring. 

    • Management of gallstone disease
    • Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery for obesity
    • Management of gastroesophageal reflux disease requiring fundoplication, paraoesophageal hernias, achalasia, gastric tumours, groin hernias, hyperhidrosis, enlarged spleen where minimal access surgery may be useful
    • Diagnostic and staging laparoscopy for evaluation of tumours


    Evaluation and management of patients with following symptoms/complaints:

    • Abdominal pain / bloatedness Abdominal swelling / mass
    • Anaemia
    • Bloody / black stools, positive stool occult blood test
    • Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)
    • Dyspepsia
    • Gallstones / bile duct stones
    • Gastric pain
    • Groin swelling
    • Heartburn
    • Hernia
    • Indigestion
    • Jaundice
    • Obesity
    • Reflux
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Vomiting

    Endoscopic procedures:

    • OGD Colonoscopy
    • ERCP
    • Removal GI tract foreign body
    • Dilatation of GI tract stricture
    • Stenting of bile duct / oesophagus / GI tract
    • Hemostasis of GI tract bleeding
    • Removal of GI tract polyp
    • Feeding tube insertion / Gastrostomy (PEG)

    • Duodenal and small bowel cancer / tumour
    • GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumour)
    • NET (neuroendocrine tumour)
    • Paraesophageal hernia repair
    • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (laparoscopic fundoplication)
    • Achalasia (laparoscopic cardiomyotomy)
    • Gallstones (laparoscopic cholecystectomy)
    • Obesity (laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding)
    • Abdominal wall and inguinal hernias (open and laparoscopic / endoscopic repair)
    • Disorders of spleen (laparoscopic splenectomy)
    • Adrenal gland tumours (laparoscopic adrenalectomy)
    • Retroperitoneal tumours / retroperitoneal sarcoma

    Referral criteria:

    Upper abdominal pain in patient with any of the "alarm" features
    above 40 years old
    associated weight loss
    haematermesis, malena
    abdominal mass
    All patients with dysphagia
    Patients who require therapeutic or diagnostic endoscopy
