Our Programmes

As a Friend of SGH, you have many opportunities to volunteer your services. Here are some opportunities where you can contribute as a Friend of SGH:

Guider's Programme

Volunteers in our Guider's Programme help patients and the general public to find their way in and around the Hospital. They also act as chaperons to patients who require assistance in the hospital. This involves registering the patient's particulars, sending patients to the consultation room, and collecting medication on our patient's behalf. This service is ideal for senior citizens, retirees or home makers who are willing to spend some time in the hospital during office hours.

Retail Cart

Our volunteers operate and manage two Retail Carts which offer a wide range of handicrafts and gift items for sale from Mondays to Fridays, 9.30am to 6pm. The funds raised are channelled to the Samaritan's Fund, which helps to pay for a wide range of our patients' needs - be it nutritional supplements or other essentials such as transport allowance and purchase of nursing and medical aids. The fund is also used to purchase gifts for patients during festive occasions. This activity is suitable for retirees or homemakers who have spare time during the weekdays. To enrol in this programme, volunteers need only commit to one session a week.

Arts Concert

The Arts Concert is a monthly event which aims to bring visual and performing arts closer to our patients. Through this programme, we hope to bring joy to our patients and to enliven their stay in the hospital. We invite schools, cultural groups and other organisations to put up a 45-minute performance for our patients on the last Friday of the month, from 7.00pm to 7.45pm. Volunteers are also needed to help accompany our patients to and from the ward to watch the performance, and also to distribute gifts and drinks to our patients. This service is ideal for schools or organisations to adopt and perform on a once a month basis. Students who wish to clock CIP (Community Involvement Programme) are welcomed to join this programme.

To participate in this programme, check out our Arts for Health Website for more information.

Arts & Craft Programme

Do you enjoy creating handicrafts, paper cranes or simple flower making? We require volunteers to engage in leisure activities such as art therapy, games, cards and conversations. The aim of this programme is to help our patients create therapeutic relations, enhance their confidence and self-esteem, and help them better integrate with the community later. This service is ideal for schools or organisations to adopt and perform on a regular basis. Typically, this programme is conducted every Saturday from 3pm to 5pm at several wards. However, volunteers who can form a team can start this programme on any other appropriate days which is convenient for the group.

To participate in this programme, check out our Arts for Health Website for more information.

Fund Raising Programme & Ad-hoc Programmes

Volunteers can plan and organise fund-raising activities to raise funds for our Arts for health programmes and also assist in our corporate programmes. These events are held on an ad-hoc basis and volunteers can help to raise funds and assist in administrative matters or even write for our own in-house newsletters called “FRIENDS”. We also have ad-hoc requests from departments for administrative help.

Merry Melodies

Entertain patients with performance (musical instruments, magic shows) at patients’ bedside at selected wards. Available only on Mon – Fri, 9am – 6pm for 1-2 hours per session.

Special Projects

We are also always on the look-out for a group of dedicated volunteers from religious groups, organisations, schools and institutions who are keen to pilot specific programmes for our patients. Interested team leaders can approach the Volunteer Coordinator to propose suitable programmes which could be coordinated by the volunteers from the schools/religious institutions or organisations. This service is ideal for schools or organisations or groups to adopt and perform on a regular basis.
