Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW)

EDAW is held globally every year in the last week of February. The aim of this week is to ultimately prevent eating disorders and body image issues while reducing the stigma surrounding this illness and improving access to treatment.

You Are Worth More Than What You Weigh Public Forum
Eating Disorders Awareness Week is a collective effort of eating disorders professionals, health care providers, students, educators, social workers, and individuals committed to raising awareness of the dangers surrounding eating disorders. The aim of EDAW is to ultimately prevent eating disorders and body image issues while reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment. It is celebrated internationally during the last week of February every year.

EDAW 2013 is from February 25th to March 2nd. This year, the SGH Eating Disorders team will be organizing a public forum targeting the general public on Saturday, March 2nd 2013 (registration starts on February 18th). Our theme for this year is "You are worth more than what you weigh!" Our aim is to make the public understand that size and shape or the number on the scale does not define an individual; there is more to a person than just his/ her physical appearance.

An art exhibition focusing on the same theme will also be displayed at ArtsExpressions at SGH Block 3. Weighing scales with positive body image, hope and recovery messages, designed by patients as well as clinicians from the Eating Disorders team, will be available for public viewing throughout the month of February.
We hope that through the art exhibition as well as the forum, we can emphasize the importance of personal attributes rather than looks and also educate people about this life threatening illness.

The theme that the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) in the US came up with was “It’s time to talk about it”. Keeping this theme in mind, SGH conducted a public forum to create awareness regarding this illness at the National Library Board. Various members of the ED team spoke at the event.

This year also marked the launch of a book titled “A Taste of Rainbow”, which was written by one of our recovered patients. The book depicts her journey of recovery from an eating disorder and depression in pictorial form.
