Light Weight Club Support Group

Parents expecting a normal infant are often in shock when their infant is admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). It is the unit's taks to help the parents cope with the situation and assist in infant-mother bonding.

The Light Weight club (LWC) was first introduced in the early 1990's . The self-help group formed by parents of very low birth weight infants with the support from the nurses is an important resource group for the unit. It is important to support parents through the physical and emotional turmoil associated with grief after the birth of a sick infant. Parenting , counselling and support begins in the NICU till discharge and follow-up.

The LWC serves as a support group to the parents of low birth weight babies born in SGH. It is recognised that low birth weight babies (less than 2000 gm) have many problems that may occur throughout a large part of their childhood. Members provide support to parents of pre-term infants by facilitating parent-to-parent contact and providing information on prematurity. Guidance is constantly offered during the baby's hospitalisation and throughout his/her early development.

Activities sponsored by the LWC include monthly journal club meetings to update one's knowledge; educational talks by doctors; tea parties with parents to allow them to share experiences and raise issues of concern on infant care; educational seminars and symposiums on child management, medical problems in infancy and child psychology and therapy for parents.

Membership is open to parents of pre-term infants. Please contact us for more information at Tel: 6321 4540.
